Today is National Winnie the Pooh Day, which celebrates A.A. Milne’s birthday—the beloved children’s author who brought the iconic honey-loving bear to life. Milne’s original collection of classic stories was inspired by his son and his various teddy bears and toys. In 1926, readers began following Pooh’s adventures with his gang of adorable friends, including Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger. Along the way, they formed an endearing friendship with a young boy named Christopher Robin.

Before his literary success, however, Milne was a WWI veteran who fought on the front lines at the Battle of the Somme. Around this time, he began writing heartwarming tales to try to overcome the dark horrors he experienced. Soon, his stories became a worldwide phenomenon. When the rights were sold to Disney in 1961, Pooh’s popularity grew exponentially. Since then, Pooh Bear has appeared in numerous animated shorts, television shows, and feature-length films. Today, families now dress in themed onesies, women proudly embrace their Pooh-inspired tattoos, and movie producers are planning an upcoming live-action adaptation. Thus, the magic of the Hundred Acre Wood burns brighter than ever before.

  1. I’m definitely an Eeyore with a hint of paranoid Piglet thrown in for good measure.
